Let's see for a start the TFL definition:

"A fanlisting is simply an online list of fans of a subject, such as a TV show, actor, or musician, that is created by an individual and open for fans from around the world to join. There are no costs, and the only requirements to join a fanlisting are your name and country. Fanlistings do not have to be large sites (although some are), they are just a place where you can sign up with other fans"

Joining fanlistings is then something you do to show your support or liking for someone or something... in my opinion, it makes more sense when you can show somewhere the fanlistings you've joined - I mean, if you have a personal website of any kind, is a quick and nice way to let your visitors know about the things you like. However, many people join fanlistings without having a website, online journal, etc. - and they do so simply because they want to be listed as fans of that subject, even when most fanlistings aren't officially approved. They do so simply because they are proud to be fans of the subject and want everyone to know it - and that is, my friends, the point of joining fanlistings: being proud to be a fan :)

So, making it short,

• To join a fanlisting, you only need to give me your name (it can be a nickname, not your real name) and country. However, I'm also allowed to require a valid e-mail address so I can contact you if needed (most likely, never - it is just in case).
• Joining a fanlisting doesn't cost any money AT ALL.
• Fanlistings, unless very special cases, aren't official. And they aren't the same as fanclubs, either.
• Last but not least, if you're worried about getting spam after joining, I'll tell that your e-mail address is spam-protected, so you shouldn't get any bit of junk mail. Besides, you can choose not to display it to increase the security, so you don't have to worry about that.
